Looking ahead to college when you’re in high school is exciting. Thinking about the new experiences, the new friends, and all of the fun you’ll have is enough to get anyone riled up! But the summer before you head off, the pressure might start to set in. Even if you’ve already done a round or two of college, it can still get the best of you. Make the most of the summer before going to college or heading back to college. It never hurts to be prepared! Pack early Getting all of your stuff together is one of the most difficult parts. Thinking about everything you’ll need for the coming semester and hoping you don’t forget anything is rough! Especially if you’re going to school far away from home, you can’t just come home for the weekend if you forget anything. Start packing up early so you’ll have most of the summer to figure out what you’re forgetting. This also applies to those who have already gone through this process once or twice. You might think you don’t have to worry but you should still be prepared ahead of time. It will also ease your anxiety about moving in. Talk to your roommate If you’re moving into the dorms, you should get to know your roommate a little to ease the transition. Knowing the person you’re going to be living in close quarters with for the next two semesters. Even if you’re not a freshman and you already know your roommates, talk to them! Remind them how much fun you are and strengthen the bond you already have. Plus it will get you pumped for all the fun you’ll have once you’re all back together. Prepare your mind for the work ahead College is difficult. You might have thought high school was hard but college is a different ball game. The classes are more intense, the tests are tougher, and the professors sometimes less lenient. If you’ve received any recommended reading, get a head start on it! You’ll cut out a lot of your work for the semester if you get on top of the recommended reading. Soak up time with your parents You might not have thought that you’ll miss your parents but when they drop you off, you’re on your own. It might take a couple of weeks but you’ll realize that you rely on them for a lot more than you thought. Spend as much time with them as you can before you head off to be a big kid. Heading away to college is hard whether it’s the first or the fourth time. Being prepared for what’s ahead is the best way to get yourself ready. Freshmen: What are you most excited for in college?
